Rolling Stones gig on 26th March
Thanks to
Roy's auntie, we managed to watch the gig free. Apparently, she bought 28 tickets to support her boyfriend who owns the event company which brought the Stones in. That's like friggin' $10, 000 spent on tickets!!!
Anyway, to me, the Stones weren't exactly something easy to get into. I've heard some songs a few years ago, like 'Jumping Jack Flash', etc. Honestly, I din like it as I thought it sounded way too raw and badly recorded. However, the Stones slowly crept into my consciousness. There was a certain undeniable quality about their songs that resonate at an emotional level. In a way, it reminded me in a way where I didn't get Radiohead's "OK Computer" and Spiritualized's "Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space" at the 1st .. even 10th try. They had balls, they had passion and they had that unbeatable sense of rhythm n blues as well.
However, for the last 20 years, they are just a money making touring machine. But hey, that doesn't mean I wun go to their gig if I dun have to pay jackshit for the ticket! They kicked off with the peripheral favourite, 'Brown Sugar' followed by a slew of songs which I can't really remember or know. But I believe they played 'Angie' which is always hilarious. They brought out all their classics (though they played 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' on Mon 24th March, crap...) and did an excellent version of 'Sympathy For The Devil' which lyrics totally kicked ass.
After which, they plunged into my all-time fave Stones tune, 'Gimme Shelter' which was pretty decent with excellent back-up vocals by the black mama. They bungled up 'Honky Tonk Women' or some other songs but it's good to know that even if you play with the same buggers after so many years, you can still fuck up. It makes me feel much better. They closed the set with extended jams of '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' and 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' with Keith Richards pounding away on his sliver plated Telecaster with a pink, yes, neon pink fretboard. Keef is still one of the coolest guitarist around. Who the fuck would actually stop mid-way into a song and tie his shoelaces and carry on playing afterwards? You just gotta respect that.
Did I enjoy myself? Well, I thought it was pretty decent but nothing much to shout about. They were all professional about it. At least, I can say that I've watched the Stones live before.
P.S.: I'm ashamed to say that Mick Jagger who is 60 this year has more energy and is slimmer than someone who is not even half his age. Fuck....

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long long year stolen many man's soul and faith
I was around when Jesus Christ had His moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate washed his hands and sealed His fate
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game
Stuck around St. Petersburg when I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Tzar and his ministers, Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank held a gen'rals rank when the blitzkrieg
raged and the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name. Oh yeah
Ah what's puzzling you is the nature of my game. Oh yeah
I watched the glee while your kings and queens fought for
ten decades for the Gods they made
I shouted out "Who killed the Kennedy's ?" when after all
it was you and me
Let me please introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I lay traps for troubadors who get killed before they reach Bombay
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name. Oh yeah
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game. Oh yeah
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal and all the sinners, Saints
as heads is tails, just call me Lucifer 'cause I'm in need
of some restraint
So if you meet me, have some courtesy have some sympathy
and some taste
Use all your well learned politics or I'll lay your soul to waste
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what'
